Awhile back I sold my 2002 E46 BMW 325i. It was light blue with tan leather. It was a terrific car that was fun, fast, and reliable for many, many years. The only reason I let it go was that at 167,000 miles, I was worried it would become to expensive to maintain—even though the only costs it gave me were expensive oil changes using 0 W40 European synthetic.
But this week, after consulting Oppositelock, I finally selected a replacement: an E90 335i with the M-Sport package. And I'm really excited because horsepower-wise and performance-wise, this is a car far superior to my 325i.
I am stoked, even though delivery from Carmax won't be until the 27th.
So, one of the first things I did was move my profile on E46Fanatics (a really terrific forum) to E90Fanatics. But so far—-not so good.
Observation:
On the E46 forum, most of the posts were mechanically out of my league. But nevertheless, I liked them because they inspired me to push my abilities (I changed my own brakes!) and these guys knew every detail of the car mechanically. It was really stunning and I found it immensely valuable. Look at this post: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Seriously. Did you read that post? That guy is amazing!
I doubt most Ferrari's get that kind of attention —much less Audis .
And, do you know what? The E46 deserves this following. It's a naturally aspirate, inline 6 cylinder, rear wheel drive car. And the 330i with a row-your-own and the sport package is awesome. If you can find a 2006, grab it. And it will probably be under $13,000.
But after spending a few days perusing the E90 page I was disturbed.
99% of the posts I've read are about "Plastidip" rims (with the tag, "don't hate!") or adding extra LED lights to sit above the angel eyes as angel eye lids. Good lawd. Shit, I defintely hate.
I'm hoping this changes with time. Maybe more E46 buyers will pick up 2007 330is or 2008 335is? I certainly hope so.
Until then— Plastidip —feel my wrath! You suck! Yes, I am a hater. These E90s deserve much more from their owners than being, "murdered out". If you must, buy new rims for BMW's M Performance division instead with that money or from DINAN, which has really great sales.

i feel you man. I am jumping from e46fanatic to bimmerfest and they just argue whether to put m badge on all day.
I am going straight to F30 (hopefully by end of year, if not I will go mad and dump money into F80), but best of luck with new ride!
Speaking of e46 and brake, I still have a set of ceramic brakes I needs to sell.

Keep us posted on any potential issues with the forced induction. I've heard a lot of 335 owners complain about issues stemming from the forced induction, typically that was in the early versions of the 335s. I'm not sure if that's still the case for the later models, or if they've worked out those kinks. Especially since the F80 M3 and F82 M4 are turbocharged. I'm going to sit on my E46 ZHP and wait for used F80 M3s to hit the market.

I'm going to follow up with a review of the car soon, along with periodical updates on maintenance. So far, my first lesson was how poorly the M-Sport is in the snow even compared to a E46 325i—like no traction at all even in 2 inches. I'm glad I don't live in Chicago for the time being. Getting snow tires this weekend.

Just hit 108k miles without any problems yet. I still have 12k left on the Carmax warranty, so I’ll take it for at least one more inspection from Autohaus BMW before the warranty runs up. This has been a terrific car.

Update: I’m up to 145,000 miles without any turbo problems. I had to replace an injector, but it was under warranty.
